According to The Block, a yellow notebook with the words “Buy Bitcoin” was sold this week for 16 BTC (approximately $1.027 million). This significant notebook gained popularity seven years ago when it appeared behind then Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen during a live broadcast.
After a week-long auction at Pubkey bar in New York, the notebook with the “Buy Bitcoin” slogan was handed over to a bidder known only as “Squirrekkywrath” on Wednesday (24th), with Christian Langalis, who originally held up the notebook in the live broadcast, also attending the event.
Reportedly, in July 2017, Yellen, then Chair of the Federal Reserve, attended a House Financial Services Committee meeting. At the time, 22-year-old Christian Langalis, an intern at the Cato Institute, managed to secure a spot behind Yellen and held up the “Buy Bitcoin” slogan to the live camera while Yellen was speaking.
According to CNBC, Langalis was kicked out of the hearing after raising the slogan, and interestingly, Bitcoin’s price rose by 3.7% that day after the footage aired. Langalis later became known in the community as “Bitcoin Sign Guy”.
Langalis personally conducted this auction on the Scarce City platform, and the auctioned notebook includes his hearing notes and a draft of the Bitcoin slogan. In a recent interview, Langalis stated that he plans to use the auction proceeds to fund his Bitcoin software development company, Tirrel Corp. The introduction on the auction website reads:
