The next major network upgrade for Ethereum, called the “Dencun Upgrade,” was successfully launched on the Ethereum testnet Sepolia last night, signaling that only the final testnet is left before the “proto-danksharding” feature is implemented on the Ethereum mainnet.
Proto-danksharding aims to reduce the transaction costs of the 2-layer network and data availability costs by introducing a new data structure called “blob.” As the number of 2-layer networks on Ethereum is rapidly increasing, this upgrade is seen as an important part of the ecosystem roadmap. After the upgrade is completed, the new data structure called “Blob” has been deployed on the Sepolia network.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin explained that earlier this month, Ethereum core developers deployed the first testnet upgrade on the Goerli testnet. After the Sepolia upgrade, Ethereum core developers will conduct the final test on the Holesky testnet on February 7, and then developers will sign the date to activate the Dencun Upgrade on the main blockchain.
