According to The Verge, multiple sources have revealed that OpenAI is developing a social networking platform similar to X (formerly Twitter).
Although the project is still in its early stages, it is reported that there is already an internal prototype, focusing on the image generation capabilities of ChatGPT, accompanied by a social feed.
Reports indicate that CEO Sam Altman is privately seeking feedback from external parties regarding this project.
It remains unclear whether OpenAI plans to launch this social platform as a standalone application or integrate it into ChatGPT, which became the most downloaded application globally last month.
If the social platform is indeed integrated into ChatGPT, it could further escalate the already tense relationship between Sam Altman and Elon Musk.
In February of this year, Elon Musk made a bid of $97.4 billion to acquire OpenAI, to which Sam Altman responded with a hint of sarcasm, saying: “Thanks, but if you’d like, we can acquire Twitter for $9.74 billion.”
Diving into the social media market would also mean that OpenAI would be more directly competing with Meta.
Reports suggest that Meta plans to incorporate a social feed feature into its soon-to-be-released independent AI assistant application. A few months ago, it was reported that Meta was developing an application to rival ChatGPT, to which Sam Altman retorted on X: “Sure, then let’s also create a social App.”
In fact, building a social application would allow OpenAI to have its own real-time data source, which is crucial for training AI models.
Elon Musk’s Grok can already display content from X in its results, while Meta utilizes its vast user database to train its Llama model.
One concept of OpenAI’s social prototype is to allow AI to assist people in creating better content.
An employee from a large AI lab stated: “Grok’s integration into X makes everyone envious, especially since it helps generate those viral, intentionally silly posts.”
Of course, OpenAI is currently involved in many projects, and it remains uncertain whether this social platform will ultimately come to fruition.
However, its existence within OpenAI indicates that the company is actively considering how to continue expanding under the high growth expectations in the future.
