Japanese Investment Company Metaplanet Announces Bitcoin Acquisition
On Monday, Japanese investment company Metaplanet announced that it has spent approximately 18.426 billion yen (about 126.7 million USD) to acquire 1,241 bitcoins as part of its “Bitcoin Financial Operations” strategy, with an average purchase price of 14,848,061 yen (about 102,119 USD).
As of May 12, Metaplanet holds a total of 6,796 bitcoins (valued at approximately 706 million USD based on the current bitcoin price of around 104,000 USD). According to Metaplanet’s CEO Simon Gerovich, the purchase cost for these bitcoins is approximately 608.2 million USD, with an average acquisition price of about 89,492 USD.
Gerovich also announced that Metaplanet’s current bitcoin holdings have surpassed those of El Salvador, stating, “From a trivial starting point to now being comparable to a nation, we have only just begun.”
According to data from El Salvador’s national bitcoin office, the country currently holds 6,174.18 bitcoins, valued at approximately 642 million USD. Data from BitBo’s Bitcoin Treasuries indicates that El Salvador’s holdings rank sixth among all countries, trailing only the United States, China, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, and Bhutan.
