Siri AI Update Delayed Again
According to TechCrunch, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, briefly mentioned Siri at a presentation:
“As we have said in the past, we are still working on making Siri more personalized. This work requires more time to meet our high quality standards. We look forward to sharing more progress in the coming year.”
This means that the major AI update for Siri may not be released until 2026, which is undoubtedly a significant setback in the rapidly evolving field of AI. Last year at WWDC 2024, Apple introduced “Personalized Siri,” emphasizing the importance of making Siri understand users’ backgrounds, communication habits, and daily schedules, and enabling cross-app operations across various applications, marking an important step in Apple’s AI transformation.
Siri Development Hindered
According to Bloomberg, while the new version of Siri has some functionalities, its accuracy is only around 66%, falling short of the release standards. Additionally, in March of this year, Apple made adjustments to its internal AI team, moving John Giannandrea, the AI strategic director leading the Siri project, and appointing Mike Rockwell, who was previously in charge of Vision Pro, indicating the company’s realization of the project’s lagging progress and the need for significant reforms.
Strengthening Forces through Collaboration with OpenAI
To compensate for Siri’s shortcomings, Apple has partnered with OpenAI. In iOS 26, when Siri cannot answer user questions, it will refer them to ChatGPT for responses. The new version will also integrate ChatGPT into the Image Playground tool for creating AI-generated image content.
Overview of Other AI Feature Updates
Despite the delay in Siri updates, Apple announced several AI features at WWDC 25, including:
- Upgrade to Image Playground: Integration of ChatGPT to enhance image generation experience
- Genmoji and Visual Intelligence: Enhancing emoji and image recognition capabilities
- AI Workout Buddy: Introducing a smart fitness assistant for Apple Watch
- AI in Xcode: Helping developers improve code writing efficiency
- AI Shortcuts: Enhancing automation scripts with new AI features
- Real-time translation and device-side large models open to developers
Investors Worried Apple is Falling Behind in the Race
Although Apple has tried to differentiate itself through design and privacy as core competitive strategies, the delays in Siri and internal adjustments suggest that Apple is generally considered to be lagging behind competitors such as Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic in the field of AI. This has not only dampened developer interest but also raised concerns among investors about Apple’s strategic positioning in the AI era.
