Recently, many Reddit users in the overseas community have indicated that after 10 years of waiting, Mt. Gox has begun to send compensation in Japanese yen through PayPal to users who have chosen cash refunds. Many users have shared screenshots of the emails they received, initially mistaking them for online phishing scams until they confirmed the deposit in their PayPal accounts.
However, shortly after, several members in the community reported receiving duplicate payments from Mt. Gox and shared the official emails from Mt. Gox, in which the bankrupt exchange acknowledged a system error and requested creditors to return the excess compensation.
As more and more community members raised similar issues, discussions about whether to return the excess compensation started within the community. Some members jokingly suggested that Mt. Gox should complete identity verification and wait for ten years before making refunds.
Nevertheless, some have cautioned users who received duplicate payments to return them promptly to avoid legal consequences.
