The University of Wyoming plans to launch the UW Bitcoin Institute in August, aiming to provide “interdisciplinary expert research” on Bitcoin. Bitcoin activist and associate professor at the University of Wyoming, Bradley Rettler, announced the establishment of this new institution on July 28 on the X platform, and will serve as the director of the institute.
Bradley Rettler expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of research on Bitcoin, stating that its “quality is poor,” and emphasizing the need for more interdisciplinary expert research in the industry to ensure the public can correctly understand the nature and operation of Bitcoin.
He specifically mentioned a study led by University of Hawaii professor Camilo Mora in 2018, which claimed that Bitcoin production alone could lead to a 2-degree Celsius increase in global temperature by 2048. Bradley Rettler criticized the study for not taking into account difficulty adjustments and a lack of understanding of the block size limit. In a tweet on July 28, Bradley Rettler emphasized:
The University of Wyoming’s Bitcoin Institute will officially open in the fall semester of the 2024-2025 academic year, and will host annual summer workshops, provide academic awards, and host weekly seminars. The institute will be established as a non-profit organization, accepting Bitcoin donations to fund research. Bradley Rettler explained:
