Binance’s New CEO’s First Public Interview
Sharp Questions from Reporters
What Qualifications to Know the Answers?
Binance’s new CEO, Richard Teng, made his first appearance this week at the Financial Times conference in London. In his debut public interview, Richard Teng admitted that Binance’s compliance system in the past was inadequate and indeed had errors:
During this public interview, Financial Times reporter Scott Chipolina repeatedly questioned Richard Teng about many issues related to Binance’s future plans and compliance measures.
For example, under the leadership of Changpeng Zhao in the past, Binance has always insisted that it does not have a fixed headquarters location, which has been a major point of contention in terms of regulation. Faced with this question, Scott Chipolina also refused to disclose the specific headquarters location, only stating that the headquarters is still under consideration and Binance will announce a global headquarters at an “appropriate time”.
When asked about Binance’s future and how the company will change under the new leadership, the new CEO remained vague, only stating that “many things will change”. The reporter then asked if Binance is willing to undergo a public audit, to which Richard Teng stated that as a private company without public fundraising, they are not obligated to publicly disclose audit information, but they undergo audits in all regulated jurisdictions. However, when asked to provide the name of the audit firm, he refused to answer the reporter’s question.
Furthermore, Richard Teng was unwilling to disclose whether Binance is reapplying for a license from the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
Faced with the reporter’s questioning, Richard Teng seemed a bit defensive, even asking the reporter in return:
In response, reporter Scott Chipolina said, “Well, Binance is the largest cryptocurrency exchange, and knowing this information is important to the public.” Richard Teng further responded, “Yes. We are responsible to our users, and our users know that we are fully accountable to them.”
