Connecting Web2 and Web3, featuring heavyweight international speakers
Event-related information
Funding the Commons is a flagship event initiated by the internationally renowned open-source research company Protocol Labs in 2021. This event is dedicated to developing interdisciplinary discussions on public goods, aiming to connect industries such as Web2, Web3, research, charity, and technology to create new value models in the open-source ecosystem. Since 2021, it has been stationed in three countries including the United States, New York, Colombia, Bogotá, and Portugal, Lisbon. In July and September of this year (2023), it will step into Paris, France, and Berlin, Germany respectively, with a global footprint. Taiwan is the first Asian country chosen by the event organizer Protocol Labs, bringing a large-scale interdisciplinary public goods discussion into the Asian narrative for the first time globally.
Protocol Labs will bring an international seminar to Taiwan this weekend on December 9th and 10th, collaborating with the local citizen technology community da0 Zero Hour and the Blockchain Enthusiasts Association to connect local open-source, digital democracy, and blockchain industries, expecting to bring the first public goods discussion of cultural exchange between the East and the West.
The term “Commons” in Funding the Commons refers to public goods, which are non-rivalrous and non-excludable resources shared collectively by people in a community, with typical examples such as parks and public libraries falling within the realm of public goods. In the highly open-source blockchain industry, the “chain” itself often represents the most important public good that needs to be maintained, and how to sustainably develop these digital infrastructures for future generations through mechanism design is the core topic of discussion in this event.
Retrospective public investment:
Discussion on more scalable “impact bonds” focusing on impact assessment
Social impact:
Observation and direction of the impact market in the Asia-Pacific region, impact assessment
Digital democracy:
Trends in democratic deliberation and policy participation in Taiwan, and the related impact of AI
Decentralized identity:
Establishing a new form of identity that allows people to control, protect privacy, and enable open interoperability
Decentralized organization:
Exploring the characteristics of a decentralized organizational structure and its potential role in society, discussing whether traditional organizations can utilize the structure of decentralized organizations
The issues discussed in Funding the Commons are not limited to Web3 and blockchain construction, but rather explore the overall societal operating models and the mutual learning opportunities with Web3 mechanisms. Through discussions on public goods topics, Funding the Commons is expected to attract traditional charity, social impact, and other communities to understand Web3, undoubtedly a key conference to elevate the blockchain discourse.
The event has invited internationally important public goods, open-source, and blockchain-related speakers from organizations such as Gitcoin, Drips Network, Golem Foundation, Hypercerts Foundation, all of which are important nodes connecting with the international community. Over half of the speakers are professors or doctors in fields such as politics, economics, and computer science, with topics that not only align with the development trends of Web3 but also represent the forefront of research in academia. Participants will have the opportunity to glimpse the core research and experiments in blockchain technology development, gaining a deeper understanding of the indispensable development direction of Web3 through this forum.
